Israeli Elections - Economy or Security?
CNN International aired this short but intelligent overview of the two major issues facing the Israeli electorate as the January 22, 2013 general election approaches.
Much of the political discourse in 2011 and 2012 focused on the economy rather than the Arab-Israeli conflict. With a civil war raging in Syria and political turmoil in Egypt the general feeling amongst Israeli citizens is that any peace plans must be put on the back burner.
While Israel has a relatively low unemployment rate of 6.7% and a growing economy that should be the envy of Europe and the US, consumer prices are high and wages are lower than in the rest of the developed world. Additionally the gap between rich and poor is one of the highest of all developed countries according to the OECD.
